Wikimania London 2014 – Not Long Now!

Here at Histropedia the whole team is really excited about the upcoming Wikimedia event this August. In an extreme stoke of good luck Wikimania is being held in London this year, and as a London based start-up that wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Wikipedia the timing for us could not be better.

We are looking forward to meeting as many Wikipedians as we can over the course of the event, including the fringe events and hackathons scheduled for June and July.

One of the areas being focused on during this year’s conference is Open Data and The Wikidata Project. This ties in perfectly with the work we are doing at Histropedia; creating a new way to visualise the data contained within Wikipedia and Wikidata.

We are especially excited about this year’s conference as we may be given the opportunity to give our own presentation where we will be demoing the latest features of Histropedia and discussing how we are using/planning to use these resources, as well as discussing ways our project may be able to assist both Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Our submission is in the Open Data track, you can view it here. If you are attending Wikimania and would like to see our presentation you can add you name to the bottom of the submission and increase our chances of being given a spot.

Regardless of whether or not we are presenting we will definitely be attending the conference, as well as many of the fringe events and hackathons (we may even be presenting at some of the fringe events). If you’re interested in the project and would like to connect during the event please drop us a line. We’d love to meet up and discuss the project.

If this is the first you’ve heard about Wikimania and are interested in attending here is some further information from the Wikimania website:

WHAT IS WIKIMANIA?

Wikimania is a 4000-person conference, unconference, festival, meetup, workshop, hackathon, and party, spread over five days in August 2014, preceded and followed by fringe events. It’s the official annual event of the Wikimedia movement, where you’ll discover all kinds of projects that people are making with wikis and open content, as well as meet the community that produced the most famous wiki of all, Wikipedia!

The main event itself is held in and around The Barbican Centre in London, UK. All are welcome, whether you’re an expert, enthusiast, beginner or just curious!

Dates:

Fringe: From May 2014
