Timeline of Mars in Film

Mars in film

In what appears to be a return to form for Ridley Scott and in a possible oscar worthy role for Matt Damon, the hottest film in cinemas at the moment is The Martian, a science fiction film based on the Novel by Andy Weir.

The film follows Matt Damon’s character who has been stranded on Mars and must survive alone with limited supplies in hope that he will be rescued. It has been called a mix between Cast Away and Apollo 13 (both coincidently starring Tom Hanks).

This latest Martian adventures continues a long tradition of films about the mysterious red planet, going all the way back to the very earliest days of cinema. Mars has remained a staple setting and subject matter ever since.
